In beautiful York Region there’s always something fun to do.
Situated on 1,756 square kilometers of land just north of Toronto, York Region encompasses nine municipalities, including Vaughan and Markham to the south and Georgina and Lake Simcoe to the north. Home to some of the best farmland, rural retreats and historic towns and main streets in the province, York Region is a great getaway location for tourists and residents alike any time of year.
Reptilia, a reptile zoo and education facility located two kilometers east of the 400 on Rutherford Road in Vaughan, is a 15,000 square foot zoo with about 250 different reptiles on display. Facility manager Lee Parker says it’s a great place for families to come in and admire the reptiles behind the safety of glass. “We also have shows and feedings going on so people can get hands-on by touching and feeling the animals during the shows.”
Parker describes the feedings as an experience most people have “only ever experienced on TV.” On the first Sunday of each month, Reptilia’s 20 foot reticulated python is treated to a feast, feeding on “anything between a 40 and 75 pound goat,” right in front of the guests eyes! And on the last Sunday of every month, the 1,200 pound crocodiles enjoy their own meal, “eating chicken and beef from a couple of feet away.”
Whether you’re interested in reptiles or fear them, Parker encourages everyone to visit Reptilia, where the staff is enthusiastic about educating people and teaching them “that reptiles aren’t as bad as what everyone makes them out to be.”
